How to check the quality of the Polo T-Shirts
Ideally all garments look good when new, the problems may start surfacing once they are used. Therefore it is very important to understand the quality of the product you are purchasing. Getting the garment laboratory tested is a good option, but not always practical especially for small quantities.
We Suggest some simple ways which may help to check the quality of the product.
Put a sample shirt through a rigorous wash with detergent, flat dry it in the shade & look out for the following :
Color Bleeding : Tie a knot on any of the t-shirt (preferably a sleeve) with a white cotton fabric and wash it with detergent. Once dried, open the knot and check if any stains of color have come of to the white cotton fabric. If there are no stains then it can be presumed that the t-shirt is color fast. Laboratory test reports normally give the degrees of fastness which are not much of a help.
Color Fading in a T-Shirt : You need to check if the color of the t-shirt is color after washing looks dull and worn out. This usually occurs if poor quality of pigments have been used for dyeing the garment.
Shrinkage : knitted cotton by nature will always shrink in the initial 1-2 washes. Internationally the acceptable level of shrinkage is not beyond 5%. Measuring the t-shirt pre and post wash also helps you understand its shrinkage. If the shrinkage is more than 5% then inform your supplier and demand for a compacted pre shrunk t-shirt. Compacting is a process which helps you reduce the shrinkage, a good quality compacting will ensure the garment does not shrink beyond 3%. Certain styles of knitting such as honey comb, waffle knit, drop needle, interlock or pique if not compacted pre-shrunk may shrink as much as 15%.
Possibility of cotton balls formation after a few washes : if the fabric feels rough or its color lacks uniformity then there is very high possibility the yarn used is carded or of a very low quality. On regular usage the t-shirt will develop cotton balls making it very uncomfortable to wear. Some manufacturers use softening agents to conceal the true quality of the fabric. Nevertheless, on closer look you will notice light and dark tones in the fabric color, this occurs as a carded yarn does not absorb the colors evenly. You should insist that the yarn used be "combed". Unless your client has asked for a "semi combed" yarn to reduce upon the cost of manufacture.
Quality of fusing used in the placket (Button Area) of the Polo T-Shirts : For polo shirts you need to ensure that a good quality fabric fusing has been used to create the placket. Manufacturers compromise by using paper fusing or low quality starched fabric fusing. In a couple fo washes the paper fusing disintegrates or the starch washes away causing the entire front button and button hole part to go out of shape.
Quality of Stitching : Ideally there should be a minimum of 10 stitches per running inch. You also need to check for flat lock stitching (double needle stitching) on the shoulders, armholes, sleeves and cuff joints and ribs stitched to the body of the garment for more durability. For polo shirts the cuff seams (from the inside) should be stitched and sealed to ensure the cuff ends do not open.
Sizer of a T-Shirt : Sizes of garments vary depending upon the country you are purchasing from. You should never go by the size mentioned on the label. Either try out the garment or specify the size in inches / cms and ask for it to be labeled as per your requirement. The chest size of a T shirt is measured in width, an inch below the armhole horizontally. Many manufacturers choose to reduce upon the size of their garments to save on their cost of production. An inch reduced on the chest would result in 2 inches reduction in the diameter. The length of the polo shirt too needs to be checked, if tucked in the trouser the same should not fall short and keep slipping out. You also need to keep in mind that cotton by nature will always shrink in the first few washes.
Thickness of the collar & cuff : You need to ensure that the collar and cuffs knitting is not loose else the collar may curl upwards and the cuffs too may get loose.
Quality of button holes : The stitching creating the button holes should be very close to each other and tight, else the button holes will loosen.
Lycra in the rib of a round neck T-Shirt : 3% lycra if added to the rib will prevent the neck from loosening and ensure it does not go out of shape.
